PHYSICAL EDUCATION
I see tremendous purpose in delivering health and physical education in schools. In todays society we are seeing a great increase in childhood obesity and often physical education within the school curriculum is the only physical activity and participation some students are exposed to. Students lack of participation in physical activity can be due to a number of reasons including; lack of motivation, low socio-economic status, low family income and access. The World Health Organisation identifies Physical inactivity as "the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality, contributing to 6% of deaths" (2010). After tobacco smoking, it is considered to be the second "leading modifiable health risk factor contributing to the burden of disease and injury in Australia".
In the future I look forward to ensuring students in my classroom are not just exposed to physical activity within the school curriculum but are given every opportunity to participate in team sports and physical activity outside of school wherever possible. This can be done through research into sports that are local and accessible to some students and that is affordable. Not just this, but I endeavour to ensure the students in my class are aware of healthy food habits and options . This can be implemented through brain food snacking throughout the day, healthy snack breaks, 'Just Dance' breaks in-between lessons and beginning the school day with a quick, active game out on the basketball courts. Physical Education in school should provide health-related and skill-related fitness concepts and skills, providing students with the necessary tools to make good decisions regarding all components of their health and wellness. Through effective teaching and implementation of varying units, physical education and activity should be inclusive of all students regardless of ability and skill level, disability and background. |
